Maruti cars are credited to have brought automobile revolution in India, where for more than two decades Indian roads had seen only the Hindustan Ambassador Premium Padmini as the only available choices. Established in 1981, Maruti Udyog Limited brought Maruti 800 which was based on Suzuki Alto that ushered the era of modern cars in India. It is the only car manufacturer in India that crossed million mark and is now accounts for 45% of cars being manufactured in India for domestic consumption.
After its success in Maruti 800, Maruti Suzuki has introduced other vehicles to cater to other segments and Maruti Suzuki Gypsy is notable among them. Gypsy is available in different variants and they are all offered as Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) class. Naturally, it is designed to work in all kinds of terrains, ranging from highways to hilly tracks and desert or snowy roads. No doubt, this character endeared it to many Indian owners of this vehicle as the road conditions prevailing in India indeed demanded high endurance. Gypsy is a vehicle that is built to suit Indian roads.
Maruti Gypsy King is modeled on Suzuki Jimmy and is built to take on the challenging roads in any weather. One more positive aspect of Gypsy is its fuel economy and is one of the main considerations for Indian customers. Many design aspects of Gypsy aid in its main function of working in wild terrains. With sufficient towing power of 80 bhp it can negotiate steep roads. The light weight of the vehicle helps it to get moving in the sandy and muddy tracts, The engine is built with high thermal conductivity materials that dissipate the heat faster so that engine can function in very hot climates for hours and can start reliably in cold climates.
Maruti Gypsy is powered by a special engine that ably suits the requirements of Sports Utility Vehicle. The engine used is 1.3 liter Type G13BB MPFI 16 Valve Gasoline, which works smoothly under the hood with power output capacity of 80 bhp or 60 KW at 6000 rpm. The maximum torque offered is 103. Nm at 4500 rpm is able to negotiate steep roads in all conditions. Coupled with the light weight of the vehicle, this torque output results in a reliable work horse in any adverse condition. The engine is mated to Syncromesh gearbox with five forward and one reverse speed with constant mesh. The suspension is made up of Front and Rear Leaf spring and also Double Action damper is provided. The suspension is built to absorb the shocks expected of a sports utility vehicle. Gross vehicle weight is 1585 kg
Maruti Gypsy is the first vehicles of its kind to be released in Indian markets. Introduced in 1985 the model has not lost its attraction. There are many professions that need the services of reliable vehicle in the tough environments of all kinds. Military, police departments, government departments operating chiefly in rural areas, civil construction and surveying professions have found that Gypsy offers them the reliable transportation in the tough conditions. When it was introduced in 1985 it was offered with 970 cc engine. Later the engine was replaced by a more powerful 4 cylinder 1298 cc capacity engine. Gypsy has one more plus point on its side, a fuel economy with 10.2 kmph on city conditions and 14.8 kmph on highways.
Maruti Gypsy is built to run in tough terrains and it does not let you down. But there are some reviews commenting on the suspension system that the rides are horribly bumpy but they are built to work on such terrains not on smooth highways. But it is also noted that loaded Gypsy is more comfortable (when you load it with weight in access of 200kg). Other disadvantage is provision of only two doors.
Maruti Gypsy has a price tag of 5,00,000 INR or US$ 12500. It has competition from Mahindra and Force Motors. But the two are run by diesel engines while the Gypsy has a better performance from its petrol engine.
You can gauge the popularity and demand of Gypsy by the fact that Gypsy can be bought with advance payment and waiting period of three months. It means that Gypsy has a good resale value also.
