BSA Motors, a business unit of the Rs. 16,000-crore Murugappa Group, launched ‘Edge’, the new generation electric scooter in the 2010 Auto Expo in New Delhi.

Priced at around Rs. 35,500, the Bsa Motors Edge has been provided in four appealing colors.

The Vice-President of BSA Motors, Mr. K.B. Srinivasan explained at the occasion that BSA Motors is regularly trying to enhance the reliability, performance and riding comfort in the electric scooter segment in the country. The company is focused on developing more reliable batteries and electronics, efficient motors and ergonomic two-wheelers, and ‘Edge’ has been developed as a product from this endeavor. He further added that his company sees a huge potential in the Indian electric two-wheeler market, and they are planning to invest around Rs. 20 crores in to Research and Development so as to continue to upgrade their products.

Design

The instrument panel consists of only an Analogue Speedometer. The Bsa Motors Edge is 1800 mm long and 635 mm wide and has a ground clearance of 3.50-10. The scooter design offers ample storage space for keeping helmet and other items.

Powertrain

The Bsa Motors Edge is powered by a 1250-Watt motor that is able to give a peak output of 1600 Watts, the highest in its segment. The earlier scooters from the company were capable of delivering a peak output of not more than 1000 Watts. Edge is capable of touching a top speed of 50 Kmph.

The ground-breaking “Planetary Geared Motor Technology” delivers a respectable torque and acceleration to the scooter, making climbing rides easy. Bsa Motors Edge has been designed as a family scooter, the reason behind its high power, and the maintenance-free battery requires around 6 to 8 hours of charging time. The battery has a capacity of 48 V and 33 AH.

The Bsa Motors Edge comes with a completely new ‘speed selection switch’ feature that allows a rider to switch between Economy Mode or Power Mode. The Economy Mode is capable of delivering higher mileage, while the Power Mode can be used for higher speeds. In the economy mode, the Bsa Motors Edge achieves a maximum speed of 40 Kmph, while in the power mode it achieves the top speed of 40 Kmph. Edge is capable of covering a distance of 50 Km per charge in the economy mode, while in the power mode the distance covered is 40 Km.

Suspension

The Bsa Motors Edge comes with an independent rear suspension, accompanied with adjustable shock absorbers for a stable and smooth ride.

Safety

Bsa Motors Edge is available with a dynamic braking system consisting of Drum Brakes for both front and rear wheels, and its tube-less tyres are capable of offering a puncture proof safer journey. Bsa Motors Edge has a wheel base of 1320 mm allowing it good coverage over Indian roads. Weighing at 122 Kg, the scooter is easy to handle and stable from the perspective that it is a family scooter.

Competition

Bsa Motors Edge beats all other competition in its segment with its 1250-Watt motor that can churn a maximum power of as much as 1600 Watts. Competitors in its class include YO Speed and Hero E-Sprint, but in terms of peak power output, the Bsa Motors Edge is simply superior.

Conclusion

At the launch of Bsa Motors Edge Mr. K.B. Srinivasan, The Vice-President of BSA Motors expressed his company’s plans to expand their presence from 8 states to 15 in the coming years. Additionally, BSA Motors stores are also going to see a growth from their present figure of 80 to over 200 in a year’s time.

BSA Motors is presently highly focused towards the development of “Advanced Motor Controller Technology” with the aim to provide higher power, speed and efficiency to its range of electric two-wheelers.
